This is not your daddy’s snorkel anymore. Dusty trail rides and deep water fordings, anyone who takes their Jeep off-road is likely to encounter these conditions someday. The new Modular XHD Snorkel System from Rugged Ridge relocates the vulnerable stock air intake location to help reduce dust clogged filters and the risk of hydro-locking your engine. It is the first and currently only snorkel designed with the modular functionality of a pre-filter Low Mount and Ram High Mount air intake design. Unlike other snorkels, you don’t have to give up flexibility for functionality.

  • Rugged Ridge – 3 Year Limited Warranty
  • Fits 07-11 Jeep Wrangler JK, 2 & 4 door models with 3.8L engine
  • High and Low mount complete system
  • Modular build, interchangeable functionality
  • Includes lower air cleaner box that mates and seals to the factory intake
  • NO cutting required in firewall, fender or hood

The engineers at Rugged Ridge worked with many customers to create this unique snorkel. This snorkel allows you to fold down your windshield, works with our dual battery tray, windshield light mounting tabs and light bar. Because what good is having a snorkel to cross the river, if you have to leave your lights and dual battery (to power your winch) on the other side?????
The Modular XHD Snorkel System comes standard with a Low Mount pre-filter and the Ram High Mount extension. The Low Mount pre-filter relocates the intake below the windshield, drawing cool air from outside the hot engine bay. The Ram High Mount extension moves the intake up an additional 21” to the top of the windshield. The two air intake mounts are easily interchangeable to give you the modular functionality best suited to your needs. The system is manufactured from premium thermoformed plastic, mandrel bent aluminum and hi-temp silicone connecting hoses. The built-in manual drain valves channel away excess water to prevent it from entering the intake system. This snorkel installs with minor modifications to the fender, but without the major cutting and surgery that other kits require. The new lower air cleaner box installs in place of the factory unit, so you don’t have to “hack and tap”.

The Rugged Ridge XHD Snorkel is available in high and low configurations:

XHD Low/High Mount Snorkel System, 07-11 Jeep JK Wrangler
Part #: 17756.20

XHD Low Mount Snorkel Kit, 07-11 Jeep JK Wrangler
Part #: 17756.06

XHD High Mount Snorkel Extension , 07-11 Jeep JK Wrangler
Part #: 17756.07 (this piece can be added to the low mount, however the Low/High combo kit is our best deal and saves $50 over buying these components separately)

FourWheeler.com has a good article out with a list of “Must Haves” if you are going offroad.  Many of us have done it before where we just hop in our rig and go off roading without grabbing our gear.  They have highlighted a few items that will help you out if you get into trouble and we carry quite of few of these products on our site.  Below are a few:

The only thing worse than being out on the trail with someone who isn’t prepared is when that someone is you! Being the guy borrowing tools to air down tires, the one without a tow-strap attachment point anywhere on his vehicle, or bumming beers off of us when the day of off-roading is done isn’t going to win you any friends. We’ll put one of the core unwritten rules in writing: Bring the stuff you need to be self-sufficient.

How much stuff you need is dependent on what type of four-wheeling you like to do and how frequently you break parts on your rig. But there are a few things that should be in and on every 4×4 all the time. By doing so, it will completely remove unnecessary hassle and inconvenience for the whole group. Don’t get us wrong, working together to overcome big challenges has made some of our off-roading trips the most memorable. There’s always an opportunity for the group to pool tools and supplies together to patch up a broken C-clip axle or rebuild a suspension link. One guy will have a grinder, another a welder, and a third enough scrap to fabricate whatever emergency fix is needed. But someone needing a Band-Aid shouldn’t bring the whole group to a stop.

We put together this list of 15 must-haves to keep in your 4×4 for any off-road foray. Actually, there’s more than 15 items listed, but no one ever complains about getting more than advertised. If you have this stuff with you off-road, everyone will be happier and safer. Feel free to chide us if you catch us on a trail without something on this list.

Stuff To Put Your Stuff In
Now that we’ve convinced you to carry the right stuff to make yours and our off-roading trips more enjoyable, let us show you the value of properly storing all of that stuff in your 4×4. First, you want to be able to quickly and easily find your tools and parts when you need them. Keeping them contained and organized makes this a snap. Second, all of these things will become projectiles during bouncy off-roading or worse, a rollover. You really don’t need a 30-pound bag of tools hitting you in the head as you’re fighting the steering wheel to maintain control over your 4×4. When we first started off-roading, we tossed a towstrap and tire wrench under the seat of the truck and within 30 minutes, both ended up under the pedals. Not good.

If you four-wheel a truck, buy a bed box and bolt it in. Fill it up with your tools and parts and then add a utility blanket or two to keep stuff from rattling. These are also handy to toss on the ground when you need to make a repair. For Jeep owners, you can buy bolt-in boxes of various sizes and shapes. The Tuffy Security Deck shown creates a large lockable storage area in the back of an ’07 or newer Wrangler that you can access via the tailgate. The company also offers a variety of all-steel security boxes in various sizes for SUVs and pickup trucks, including some small bed-size boxes and slide-out drawers.

Good news! DriveOffroad has the EXCLUSIVE FIRST LOOK at the Rugged Ridge Modular XHD Snorkel System.  Rugged Ridge debuted this new product at SEMA 2011 in Las Vegas, where it won a SEMA Media Award.

We are told the snorkel will be available first quarter 2012.  This quality piece relocates the vulnerable stock air intake to reduce risk of hydro-lock or clogging your filter full of dust. Following the mutli-piece functionality of the other Modular Rugged Ridge products, the Snorkel System can be configured as a low mount intake, where air is taken in by the windshield, or as a high mount using the optional Ram High Mount Intake that extends an additional 21″ to the top of the windshield.

Also, this isn’t just some cheap piece of plastic. Manufactured from premium thermoformed plastic, mandrel bent aluminum, and high-temp silicone hoses ensure that this snorkel system will hold up to the elements. Built in manual drain valves channel away excess water from entering the intake.

Furthermore, for those worried about having to hack up your Jeep to install it, never fear. Minimal modification to the fender is the only requirement as opposed to more invasive kits. The lower air cleaner box installs in place of the OEM so you’ll be up and running in no time.
